Kangaroo Paw

Anigozanthos spp.

Kangaroo Paw Plant Features

Kangaroo paw is an unusual and special warm-weather perennial that shows off interesting brightly colored, velvety flowers. The buds of this Australian native have an interesting shape and that's where the name kangaroo paw comes from. In addition to being beautiful, kangaroo paw is an excellent, long-lasting cut flower and also attracts butterflies and hummingbirds into the garden. The plant's fantastic heat tolerance makes it a top pick for containers on sunny decks and patios in the North.

Kangaroo paw has almost grassy leaves and tall stems of flowers, so it's ideal for mixing in with more traditional mounding perennials to add a splash of texture. In container gardens, kangaroo paw is an excellent "thriller" plant and takes on the role of being a focal point wherever it's planted.

Most varieties grow from 2-4 feet tall. It's hardy in zone 10, but is often grown as an annual in colder zones.

Kangaroo Paw Growing Instructions

Grow kangaroo paw in a sunny spot for best flowering. Once established, it's delightfully drought tolerant so you don't have to worry about watering it during every dry spell. Kangaroo paw likes to be on the dry side, so be sure to plant it in well-drained soil and don't overwater it as it can easily rot.

In garden beds and borders, you don't usually need to worry about fertilizing kangaroo paw, but if yours isn't blooming well, fertilizing it in spring and summer may help it produce more flowers. In containers, fertilization is helpful to ensure it shows off a steady supply of blooms.

Note: Kangaroo paw is not intended for human or animal consumption.
