who is costa farms

Love plants? So do we! The Costa Farms family, as we consider ourselves, grows houseplants and garden plants that we ship to retailers across North America. Visit garden centers, home-improvement centers, club stores, or grocery stores and you’re likely to see our plants. It’s our goal to help you have the houseplants and garden of your dreams.

Our Story

Costa Farms, headquartered in Miami, Florida (AKA plant paradise!), is one of the largest horticultural growers in the world. The company sprouted in 1961 when our founder, Jose Costa Sr., purchased 30 acres south of Miami to grow fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes in the winter and calamondin citrus in the summer. That soon morphed into houseplants, and the Costa Farms family started innovating and introduced new houseplants such as the canela tree and Cecilia Aglaonema.

We grow a stunning array – more than 1,500 varieties – of houseplants to help ensure you can grow houseplants successfully. And we’re always working on putting together new plant collections that make it easier for you to pick the plants that are right for you. For example, our Plants of Steel collection puts the varieties we find best tolerate neglect. And our Exotic Angel brand of plants represents some of the most beautiful, interesting, and colorful varieties available. To ensure you have a good experience with our houseplants, we acclimate our plants from Miami conditions to those of the average household environment before shipping them to the stores.

Costa Farms and Outdoor Plants

Our passion extends to outdoor garden plants, as well. We’re excited to offer a variety of gorgeous flowering plants for tropical landscapes -- or for container gardens on decks and patios in areas outside of Florida. We’ve been growing annual flowers for more than 20 years in Miami and North Carolina. In 2012 an expansion into South Carolina allowed us to begin offering perennial flowers to retailers in the Southeast.

China

To ensure we’re offering the best plants and newest innovations, we also have an office in Guangdong, China.

Dominican Republic

We start and propagate many of our own plants at our nursery in the Dominican Republic. By starting our own plants, we’re able to ensure we’re growing high-quality, healthy plants from the beginning.

Gardenvision

This affiliate of Costa Farms focuses on executing point-of-purchase placement, merchandising plans, and planograms via regular in-store visits. Through the Gardenvision team, we’re trying to make it easier for you to shop for plants at your favorite retailers.

Total Growth Solutions

We also grow young plants for other finished growers. Total Growth Solutions sets itself apart from other young-plant growers by offering high-quality plugs, improved genetics, and simplistic delivery options.

costa farms r&d

There's no shortage of brainpower here. Our research and development team helps us be sure that we’re growing the best plants on the market -- whether it’s a houseplant, annual or perennial flower, or patio plant. We scour the globe looking for the newest plant varieties and thoroughly test them before we sell them.

Costa Farms Trial Garden

We test annual flowers in our 2-acre Trial Garden in Miami, Florida. We have two evaluation periods, Season Premier from December to May, and Summer Showdown from June to November.

Because of Miami’s mild winter weather, the Season Premier garden approximates spring/summer conditions in the North. The Summer Showdown garden tests plants for tolerance to heat, humidity, and heavy rain. If a plant variety survives the Summer Showdown garden, it should survive the summer just about anywhere.

The Trial Garden is composed of two main areas. The Core Garden contains 40 60-foot-long, 3-foot-wide row beds. Six plants of each variety to be tested are planted in the rows. The Landscape Garden allows sponsors to see their varieties in a professionally landscaped setting.

Plant Breeders can have varieties tested years before the plants are released on the market. These trials give breeders valuable information on their future new varieties.

Postharvest trials at Costa Farms replicate temperature and lighting found in the average home, allowing us to see how long different plants should last indoors or outdoors in the typical home environment.
