Ti Plant

Cordyline fruticosa

Ti Plant Plant Features

Ti plant is a bold houseplant with flamboyantly colored foliage. Also called cordyline, cabbage palm, or good luck plant, it's a perfect choice for adding a dash of style and drama to any well-lit room in your home. Most ti plant varieties have purple foliage variegated with streaks of hot pink, cream, white, or other shades of purple. The leaves add more color than many flowering houseplants -- and they're attractive all year long.

Ti plant is often being associated with good luck. In some areas of the tropics (it's a landscape shrub in frost-free areas) the plant is grown outside of outside of houses to bring good fortune and ward off ghosts or evil spirits.

Ti Plant Growing Instructions

Grow ti plant in a high-light situation. In most areas, this colorful houseplant can take direct sun on the leaves when grown indoors. Water ti plant when the soil surface starts to dry. The plant is fairly drought tolerant, but the leaf tips may develop some browning if the plant stays too dry for too long. Like many tropical houseplants, ti plant appreciates the high relative humidity of its native range. It tolerates the humidity levels in the typical home pretty well, but if your home's air is on the dry side, it's helpful to boost humidity around your ti plant. Indoors, ti plant is slow growing, so the only pruning that should be necessary is to remove old leaves as age and turn yellow.

Tropical ti plant is not intended for human or animal consumption.

Special Care

Outdoors, ti plant (Cordyline fruticosa) makes a fantastic patio plant for dramatic container gardens where it pairs wonderfully with impatiens, sweet potato vine, browallia, and other favorites. In frost-free regions, it's grown as a landscape shrub where ti plant adds color and drama to yards all year long. When growing ti plant outdoors, give it some shade from the hot afternoon sun. Keep the soil moist, but not wet for extended periods. As a landscape shrub outdoors, it's hardy in Zones 10-11.
