Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris 'The King')

Ostrich Fern Plant Features

Ostrich fern is a big, bold, North American native plant that can grow to 6 feet in optimal conditions, making it a standout in the shade garden. The lush green leaves make for an attractive backdrop to other plants and can hide objects and create a visual screen. It grows by rhizomes and, over time, can form large, dense clumps. Ostrich fern grows best in consistently moist soil and shade or part shade. The large fronds can become tattered if they're exposed to too much wind and will quickly turn brown if allowed to dry out. It prefers cool-summer areas, but tolerates hot areas such as the Deep South if it stays moist through the summer and fall.
